What to Expect From an Irlen Screening

The Irlen Method has been scientifically proven and successfully used to identify and help people with this type of visual processing problem for over 40 years.

To first determine whether or not you should schedule a screening, take the Irlen self-test here.
If you answer yes to three or more of the questions in any one of the sections then you will want to schedule your formal screening to determine if you may be experiencing the effects of a visual processing perception problem like Irlen Syndrome.

The formal assessment process is separated into two testing sessions, first the Screening and then the Diagnostic. The goal of each screening is to not only provide awareness on the degree of Irlen symptoms present but to provide understanding on how to cope and relieve symptoms.
Phase 1: The Screening

-
Performed by a certified Irlen Method Screener
-
Includes assessment of Irlen symptoms where we will do various perceptual tasks that will reveal the type of distortions you are experiencing and will educate you as to what a page should be like.
-
We will determine the severity of your symptoms (slight, moderate or severe)
-
We will also establish the color of the plastic overlay which will provide the greatest relief and benefit for reading and you will be given this overlay to take home to use when reading along with additional resources and guidance for your next steps, including how to schedule an assessment with an Irlen Diagnostician for filtered lenses to provide day-long relief of symptoms.
-
You will experience immediate changes and improvement when reading with the colored overlays and a renewed hope for the future as you anticipate the holistic treatment you will experience with spectral lenses.
-
The screening also provides ongoing support of dealing with Irlen symptoms and navigating next steps from someone who is both certified and also has had first hand experience living with Irlen.

-
Additionally, you will be provided with individual accommodation letters for school or work.

Phase 2: Diagnostic
-
You will be referred to a licenced Irlen diagnostician who will determine your individualized Spectral Filter specifications for the colored lenses
-
Full tinting process
-
Often the filter color is not the same as the overlay color so it is important to be formally assessed and not just purchase lenses in the same color as your overlays
-
Your tint will be rechecked annually as it is likely to change over time as your brain changes
-
Younger people tend to change tints more frequently because they are still growing

How to Prepare for An Irlen Screening
Since Irlen is not a vision problem, it is important to rule out any visual issues before scheduling an Irlen Screening, therefore it is suggested to recieve a visual exam. Please note that a visual exam does not rule out the possibility of Irlen Syndrome. Irlen is a brain based condition not a visual condition and cannot be diagnosed nor ruled out by an optomotrist or opthamologist.
